Continuous Assessment – Assignment (Group) (20%)

Assignment Brief
Communicate with a target audience, in a visual form, the emotions or the message in a song or a poem.

Requirements
In this group work, you are to decipher the meaning or emotions of a given song or poem. Utilising the elements of design and the principles of organisation, create a work of design that communicates the message or emotions of the given song or poem. The work of design can be in any form, deem fit by you, in the context of the song or poem. However, do consult in your lecturer the size of the design work before finalising your idea.

Each member of the group must contribute to produce a collective sketchbook that records everyone’s research, ideas, opinions and sketches.

The final outcome is to be accompanied by a rationale of about 250 words, stating what you understand from the song or poem (your deciphering) and explaining about the idea behind your final design. You are to present your work on the submission day.

Duration
4 weeks (Briefing: Week 1; Deadline: Week 4).

Submission
Format Digital submission (in one PDF file) through TIMeS: Assignment cover sheet, image(s) of the final design work, idea sketches, rationale and reference list.

Assignment Goals
1. Students to demonstrate research skills.
2. Students to employ effective visual communication skills.
3. Students to solve problems with relevant design solutions.

Project

Team: Xin Ying, Christie, Rinaldo and Alvin

Song given : Metallica- The Unforgiven

Song lyric:

New blood joins this earth,
And quickly he's subdued.
Through constant pained disgrace
The young boy learns their rules.

With time the child draws in.
This whipping boy done wrong.
Deprived of all his thoughts
The young man struggles on and on he's known
A vow unto his own,
That never from this day
His will they'll take away.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never be.
Never see.
Won't see what might have been.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

They dedicate their lives
To running all of his.
He tries to please them all –
This bitter man he is.

Throughout his life the same –
He's battled constantly.
This fight he cannot win –
A tired man they see no longer cares.

The old man then prepares
To die regretfully –
That old man here is me.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never be.
Never see.
Won't see what might have been.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never be.
Never see.
Won't see what might have been.

What I've felt,
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown.
Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

You labelled me,
I'll label you.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

You labelled me,
I'll label you.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

Never free.
Never me.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

Song analysis:
From the lyric and the tone of the song, my teammates and I had done some research and we found that this song is James Hetfield's most personal track of all Metallica songsThe song explores James' tumultuous childhood. His dad left the family when he was thirteen for no apparent reason, only a mare note was left behind explaining his departure. James got really mad at his father for leaving them behind as his father was the breadwinner of the family and that his mom wasn't as effective at being a single parent. She made a living painting stuff, but besides that, she wasn't able to properly take care of James and her daughter. Nevertheless they managed to push on, but not for long. His mom passed away when James was sixteen after a losing battle with cancer. James never really had close friends. At school he was an outcast because he was "different" from the rest of his classmates. Without a parent or close friends, James quickly fell into drinking. We felt that his life was very depressed and we think that he was planning to commit suicide as the lyric stated that "The old man then prepares / To die regretfully. "

At first, my teammates and I where planning to make a animation video with the story line above. We chose animation video because it contain visual message and audience can understand easily with seeing the picture and animation rather than imagine it. Moreover, it will be more interesting compare with other visual form as it contains movement. But because of some of the technical problem, so we had a discussion and we decided to make a pop up book with the same story line. We had break the story into 4 parts and each of us chose one part to make a pop up card that explain the story of that certain part.

Why pop up book?
Since we facing some technical issues, so we decided to make pop up book because it looks more interesting compare to a normal story book as it produce some movements when we open the book.

Our final art work

Front cover of the pop up book

Final art work of my part
For my part, I had chose the black colour as the background because the story was very sad. The scene at the top of left show his father's leaving and the scene at the top of right show his mother's dead. The broken heart at the middle indicate James was very depressed and sad.

Final Assessment: Research Articulation (40%)

Research Articulation Brief
Design is a mode of communication that engages the intellect and emotions through the visual sense. One of design’s roles is to solve problems. The inspiration of ideas many a time comes from around us. Looking at the local, Malaysian scene, there are many visual cultural art forms that can serve as inspiration for ideation. This project looks into producing a work of design that is inspired visually or conceptually by Malaysian visual cultural art forms.

Two most apparent examples of Malaysian visual cultural art forms are batik and wayang kulit. Another example, although not very common, is the masks/carvings of the indigenous Mah Meri tribe. There are many more types of visual cultural art forms unique to Malaysia.

Museum and gallery visits are among the activities that students will have to take on to enrich their exposure to these art forms so that they gain better understanding through visual experience for the execution of this project.

Requirements
Demonstration of research skills, application of research and knowledge, and students’ evaluation of their learning is expected in the final outcome of this project.

1. Select a health/environment/social/animal issue that is current in Malaysia.
2. Conduct research on that selected issue. Pictures, captions and written information supported by secondary sources are compulsory.
3. Select a form of Malaysian visual cultural art form of your choice.
4. Conduct in-depth visual and background research of that Malaysian visual cultural art form. Pictures and written information supported by secondary sources are compulsory.
5. Utilising the knowledge you had gained from the research of that Malaysian visual cultural art form, brainstorm design ideas to solve the selected issue. Do this in your sketchbook. Each idea must be accompanied by a short description, including a rationale for each idea.
6. You may interpret and contextualise what you understand from those visual cultural art forms anyway you see fit to as a design solution to the selected issue.
7. You must produce evidence of idea inspiration.
8. You are also expected to apply the knowledge you have gained from the topics in this module.
9. The final work of design, although needs to show relevance to the selected issue, visual cultural art forms and topics in this module, can be in any form, deem fit by you.
10. A written rationale of about 300 words is to accompany the final work of design and how you have used your choice of Malaysian visual cultural art form as part of the design.
11. A written reflection of about 300 words, guided by these questions:
i. What have I learned from this module?
ii. How have I contributed to the learning?
iii. How can I apply what I’ve learned to future classroom situations and lessons?
iv. What are the changes I would suggest for the betterment of the module (delivery, topics, learning tools, etc)?

Duration

Project

The issue in Malaysia that I selected is the increasing number of stray animals in Malaysia. Every now and then, the number of stray animals was increasing, especially dogs and cats. The current reaction or solution that taken by animal shelters were to adopt the strays. However, as the increasing number of strays, most animal shelters nationwide couldn’t afford to accommodate any additional animals as they were not able to take care of the large number of animals and also facing the financial issue.

Stray dogs bark at people and rummage through rubbish bins at Bandar Putra Kulai.

My selected Malaysian Cultural art form: Street art/ Graffiti

Street art or graffiti is a visual art created in public locations and it also a form of artwork that is displayed in a community on its surrounding buildings, streets, and other publicly viewed surfaces. The work has moved from the beginnings of graffiti and vandalism to new modes where artists work to bring messages, or just simple beauty, to an audience. In recent years, mural art has become an increasingly big deal in Malaysia. Penang street art started when an artist, Ernest Zacharevic was commissioned to draw murals for Georgetown Festival in 2012.

“Little children on bicycle” by Ernest Zacharevic

Why street art?
  • it is a public art
  • it is large
  • easily get attention from people who pass by
  • message can be spread widely when people took picture of it and share it on social media

Idea generation

First design
In this design, I plan to draw a dog because the research shows that the main stray animal is dog. The cute design of the dog is to stimulate the sympathetic of human to adopt the stray animals and to raise the awareness of human towards the stray animals in Malaysia. The installation is the empty bowl that will place in front of the mural to show that stray animals don't have food to eat. The installation allows the outside community to interact with the artworks.
Second design
In this design, I was inspired by Haris Rashid art work which is " Lone wolf " that uses the combination of nature elements and animal to tell audiences that nature and animals, " flora and fauna" should be protected. The symbol on the top of the cat 's head included Chinese's , Indian's , and Malay's traditional symbol which represent Malaysia. Cat is chosen as there will be a sensitive issue if Malay's traditional symbol is place on dog's head.
Third design ( Selected design)
In this design, the plaster on the dog's head shows the strays are suffering outside and to increase the awareness of animal abuse in Malaysia.

 Final design art work

I decided to paint a dog as a street art as it is the main stray animal in Malaysia. Moreover, I decided to use the cute design of a dog to stimulate human sympathy and to paint it according to the style of Ernest Zacharevic’s artwork “Little children on bicycle”, which is oil painting style. Next, I decided to draw a plaster on the dog’s head to show that stray animals are suffering outside and to increase awareness of animal abuse. I also decided to include a installation in my artwork which is an empty bowl as the combination of installation and painting allows the outside community to interact with the artworks.
